Bajura and Salt

We are still in fight for the position and the fame while our people are dying for the salt. Our political leaders are busy in strikes and speeches either in Parliament or in the street, when people struggle for a week just to get a salt.  You say that you fight for the Nation but you are not even able to provide five kg of Salt to your people , then what would people expect you to do for the nation? This is an irony in Nepal. People in Bajura have to spend Rs 2000 to buy just five kg salt for Rs 45. Poverty has reached its climax in mid and Far western part of Nepal. Villagers forced to trek for days, queue up for hours to get just five kg of salt. (The Himalayan Times, 8th October, 2012)

“We have to spend more than Rs 2,000 for food alone, as it costs Rs 150 for a meal on way to Kolti to get salt. – Man Thapa for Bichchhyan.”

I assume further when such disaster appears in our society. I wonder, sometime our church may have widened their sight in counting the needs. This does not mean that churches are silent over the needs of surrounding. However we can do much more than what we are doing at the moment.  We, probably get ready for the challenges even though government undermines the need of the people. I think this is what Jesus commanded – Love your God and Love your neighbor.  Who is my neighbor then? Someone said that people in the Karnali are so harsh and you cannot change them. I think they are right. They are right in a sense that you and I cannot change others unless Jesus intervenes in between. This is a problem with Christianity that we tend to be a subject of transformation. This is entirely wrong conception. You and I cannot be a subject of transformation. Jesus is the only one who deserves to be a  subject. We are just an agent for the transformation. This is a problem of the community development work in Christian Mission. Many a time, we divide the cake which in fact has not to be divided.

Therefore let us discover the opportunity to be a light and salt, giving a full credit to God alone.
