(Banke, Nepal) a migrant worker was arrested and sent to the police custody in
April when he was found with sum of 3 lakhs (Indian currency of 500 denominations)
by border security force in Nepalgunj. And BSF sent him to Revenue Department.
His wife had to sell the land in return to rescue her husband. (Kantipur, 16th
July, 2012. Kathmandu) The Indian currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000
are banned in Nepal since 2000. It’s applicable to both Indian and foreign nationals
traveling to Nepal
In fact, Not only migrants but also many foreigners
were arrested in Airport check point or in the land check point, when they were
found with large sum of Indian currency of 500 and 1000 denomination. Thought
Nepali government has banned Indian currency of 500 and 1000 denomination in 2000;
most
do not notice it and remain blithely unaware of the ban.
In you are
caught with Indian Rs. 500 or Indian Rs. 1000 notes in Nepal, the entire amount
in Rs. 500 or Indian Rs. 1000, will be confiscated and you may be subjected to
fine or imprisonment( up to three years) in Nepal.
Therefore,
it is suggested to migrants, not to carry a cash amount in hand when they
travel to Nepal. India has provided a facility to migrants to remit the amount
through the NEFT policy.
